Barszcz z Uszkami

This is a very tasty soup that looks like balls of dough in beet juice. The ball of dough is actually a dumpling which you can see in my spoon and is stuffed with something. The texture is rather chewy and the soup is delicious.

Naleśniki

The dish here is what we'd call a crepe. They are stuffed with either cheese or with jam and sprinkled with confectioners sugar. Again a delicious lunch. It tastes and has the texture like eating pancakes without the syrup.

Beef

This is a popular way of eating beef in Poland -- stewed with fried fresh mushrooms from the forest and boiled potatoes. The beef was simular to what we'd call the eye-round cut.

Żurek

Like all the soups served by Janina, this was very delicious. A large number of meals served at lunch — the big meal of the day — starts with a heaty helping of soup. And yep, that's a chicken leg you see in the middle of the bowl. You eat it by using your spoon to tear of the meat or when chicken on a bone is served it's OK to eat it with your hands.

Pierogi

This was a very interesting dumpling meal. All dumpling are not served in a soup mixture, but is as you see here served on a plate garnished with herbs. The texture was a little chewy but delicious. The dish was served with baked potatoes - sort of quartered and with skins. The meal was also served with a dish of about 5 or 6 vegetables - somewhat like a salad except each one was segregated and not tossed.

(The "security" pencil and index cards you see in my shirt pocket are the way I make notes as we travel about.)

Dumplings filled with either a) cheese and potato (Russian style); b) cabbage and mushrooms; c) meat; d) fresh fruit (strawberries or blueberries are common)

Breakfast

A typical breakfast features open faced sandwiches. The breads are whole grain and you begin by spreading it with either margarine/butter, mustard or cream cheese, overlay it with a slice of meat - usually ham/pepperoni - then a slice of cheese and topped with a slice of tomato. Tomatos here are typically sliced 90 degrees from what you generally see in America.

Usually consists of an assortment of meats, cheeses, and breads for open-face sandwiches, as well as tea and something sweet

Potato Pancakes
