Mel 'n' Omi's Great, Central European Adventure
Some Island in Slovakia that Kinga Insists Has No Name Friday 30 August   Back
We visited a mountain lake across the border in Slovakia. We took a boat ride over to a small island offshore and toured an old church building (now a museum). We learned that the lake was manmade and previously there had been 4 villages around a high hill containing their church. And when the area was flooded this church was the only building left on the hill in the middle of what now is a lake. Inside the church were many carved icons dating back to the 12th century.

What impressed me was that when we arrived at the lake, it was misting rain from a low-lying cloud as we prepared to launch to the island. Before reaching the island, the cloud lifted and the mist left during entire time we were on the island and then started again after we got back into our car!

Mode of transport

In the 1950's the Czechoslovakian government decided to make a dam in the Orava region. The result: four villages flooded.

One hill of one village remained above the water level; on that hill was a church. Of course it made no sense for it to remain a church. "What?!" asked Jan, "Were they supposed to go to church by boat?" So they turned it into a museum.

Mel 'n' Omi, as might be expected, were fascinated.
