Mel 'n' Omi's Great, Central European Adventure
The High Tatra Mountains Thursday 05 August   Back
The view

The majority of the Tatra Mountains are in Slovakia, including the highest peak. Mel 'n' Omi had already been to the Tatra Mountains three times:

But this was the first time they really went up the Tatra Mountains.

Today we went to the Tatra Mountains. What an adventure! It took us nearly two hours to drive there and we had to cross the border into Slovakia. Because we're Americans, it takes us 5 times longer to get across than the Poles or Slovakians. Each country has to do something with our passport on a computer — somewhat like using a credit card. Then they stamp the passport and we're finally on our way. On the return, the same thing occurred!

After arriving and parking, we took a gondola ride up the amazing Tatra Mountains. We actually were on two rides. After the gondola ride, we went on up to the top of a steep mountain in a ski lift type seat. Again, hikers were all over the place (some walking the entire distance from bottom to top!) and we were amazed at their strength in climbing all over the rocks like they did.

We had originally purchased tickets to go to the very top, but changed our minds (It really did look scary) for our wait was four hours and we decided we didn't want to wait that long. Only one gondola made the trip to the top and slowly returned. Jan was able to sell the tickets to others who did want to go to the top. I couldn't believe how high up we were! It was difficult walking along the paths before and after the gondola/ski lifts. There are no even steps, just rocks of all sizes that you have to balance with each step! Hopefully we'll have some good pictures to show you of the magnificent view from bottom to the top and from the top overlooking Slovakia. At times you couldn't see the top because the clouds would roll in. The wind blew really hard at times and then other times we had bright sunshine.
