Mel 'n' Omi's Great, Central European Adventure
Zakopane Monday 02 August   Back

"Zakopane" means "buried" in Polish, and seeing as it's literally surrounded by mountains, it's not difficult to understand where the name came from.

We went by bus this morning to Nowy Targ, then on to Zakapone — the Polish version of "Gatlinburg, Tennessee." Gazillions of cheese shops, and the usual touristy trinkets. There also were some serious shops where 'Omi bought a winter jacket with a zip on/off hood for a little less than $33. We made the mistake of thinking it was summer time in Poland and packed accordingly. We had to wear jackets and sweaters all but two days here.
